Weekend, April 7-8, 2018 — We were never addicted to shooting more than 200 yards in “the old days,” whenever that was. But hunting etiquette pretty much dictated that you don’t shoot at an animal much farther beyond that for fear of either fatally wounding it resulting in its escape to parts unknown and dying a miserably slow death, or maybe missing the one chance you had at bagging meat for the freezer or a trophy head on the wall. My, how things have changed.

While guns have improved at the manufacturing level, some of which are engineered specifically for long range shooting and optics tailored for distances well beyond the arc of the planet, the biggest advancement may be in the ammunition designed and used for everything from sniper warfare to competition.  And competition has been the newest driving force in taking rifle use to a whole ‘nother level.

Competition shooting can be very challenging and hunters who engage in it do so not just to see how far down range they can accurately hit the target but, in hunting, the combination of shooter, rifle, optics and ammo must be so precise as to nearly guarantee the desired result…downed game at quadruple digit ranges.
