CT – GUN POLITICS – Grim timing for obstruction of gun reform bill

As Nathaniel Berhow observed his 16th birthday Thursday by allegedly killing two of his Santa Clarita, California, classmates and gravely wounding himself and three others, Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut was on the floor of the U.S. Senate, advocating passage of universal background checks for gun purchases that had been passed by the House. Blumenthal has been an advocate of that modest step toward gun safety ever since the 2012 murders of 20 first graders and six adults in Newtown, Connecticut. As he spoke, an aide informed him of the tragedy unfolding in Santa Clarita. “As I speak on the floor right now, there is a school shooting in Santa Clara, California,” Blumenthal said, misreading the city name. “How can we turn the other way? How can we refuse to see that shooting in real time demanding our attention, requiring our action?” Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi blithely turned the other way, blocking the bill without explanation.  [full article]
