GA – GUN CONTROL – Raphael Warnock takes shot at Georgia gun law in newly unearthed sermon

The Rev. Raphael Warnock — the Democratic candidate for US Senate in Georgia — took a jab at Georgia gun laws in a recently unearthed sermon. The senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta made the comments in 2014 while speaking about “lax” Georgia gun laws. “I had to go to the Capitol yesterday because they decided what we really need is more guns and more access to guns by more people in more places,” Warnock said. “So, somebody decided that they had the bright idea to pass a piece of legislation that would allow guns and concealed weapons to be carried in churches. “Have you ever been to a church meeting? That’s the last place—” he added with a smile as he was cut off by laughter from the audience. Once the chuckles died down, he continued, “Whoever thought of that had never been to a church meeting.” The National Rifle Associated dredged up the sermon, tweeting that it shows Warnock “LAUGHING at church-goers who defend themselves with guns.” The post included video from the 2017 Texas church shooting in Sutherland Springs that left 26 people dead — and stopped only when an armed parishioner shot the gunman, who fled. “Rev. Warnock, Law-abiding Americans defending themselves is no laughing matter,” the tweet on Monday said. The NRA also noted that “Georgians have a clear choice Jan. 5.” Warnock will face Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler in the Jan. 5 runoff election, one of two that will decide control of the US Senate.  [full article]
