INT’L – GUN CONTROL – ‘Don’t bring your guns,’ marchers warned before Hill protest against firearm ban
Organizers of a march past Parliament Hill this weekend to protest the Liberal ban on assault-style rifles have warned gun owners coming to the event to leave their firearms at home. A “Survival Guide” that the Canadian Coalition for Firearms Rights (CCFR) posted cautions marchers about a range of pitfalls in their path in the polarized landscape of the gun ban, including potential infiltrators intent on giving the crowd a bad image by pretending to be part of the march. The CCFR is hoping for a crowd of 1,000 at Saturday’s march. “Can I bring my guns?” the guide asks rhetorically in a Q and A format. “No — Do not bring any of your firearms to this march,” the guide advises, identifying a specific section of the Criminal Code that makes it illegal for anyone “without lawful excuse” to carry a weapon, a prohibited device, or any ammunition or prohibited ammunition to a public meeting, or even carry weapons or ammunition on the way to a public meeting. “Do not try and intervene in potentially dangerous situations or put yourself in harm’s way,” the guide continues. “Make sure you arrive with a fully charged cellphone if you’ve got one. If you see something suspicious or concerning, make sure you video-record it. This should be your first reflex at the sign of trouble. If you see other people beside you doing the same, consider moving to capture a different angle,” the notice says in another section. While the fear of potential trouble and infiltrators might seem paranoid, the warnings are necessary, said Tracey Wilson, the CCFR’s vice-president for public relations and its registered lobbyist.
