KY – GUN RIGHTS – With armed rallies rumored this weekend, will Kentucky be next to ban guns at its Capitol? (VIDEO)

As law enforcement across the nation prepare for the possibility of armed rallies at state capitols this weekend, Kentucky has not made a move to change its policy allowing firearms on its own Capitol grounds. In Michigan, a state commission voted Monday to ban the open carrying of weapons in the Capitol building, but so far Kentucky has no plans to do the same. “Currently, visitation at the Capitol is extremely limited due to the COVID-19 worldwide health pandemic,” said Jill Midkiff, spokeswoman for the Finance and Administration Cabinet, in a statement. “Due to this restricted access, the existing regulation in the Capitol, which affects all three branches of government, has not been re-evaluated.” Gov. Andy Beshear gave a similar response when asked during his daily coronavirus briefing if Kentucky might follow Michigan’s ban, adding that “any changes in the policies (would) be a conversation to have with both the legislative and the judicial branch, because they’re all under one roof.” Michigan’s decision to ban the open carry of guns inside its Capitol comes after the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday and as law enforcement across the nation brace for the possibility of more violence. The FBI issued a warning of possible armed protests at all 50 state capitols from Jan. 16 through the presidential inauguration, an official with knowledge of a bulletin told USA TODAY. A group of about 100 Kentucky protesters — including many who were armed — gathered outside the commonwealth’s state Capitol on Saturday for a “patriot” rally. Beshear condemned the event during his COVID-19 update Monday, saying the group took a lap around the Capitol to honor “one of the domestic terrorists who broke into the U.S. Capitol building,” referring to the woman who was shot and killed by Capitol Police as the rioters tried to force their way into the House Chamber.  [full article]
