LA – GUN VIOLENCE –  Opelousas Man Holds Final Day of Seven-day ‘Put the Guns Down’ Prayer Service (VIDEO)

Opelousas, La. – After seeing an uptick in violence in the Opelousas community, one man decided to make it his mission to bring the community together and put the guns down. According to Opelousas police records, there was an increase in gun violence in 2020 as compared to 2019 which inspired Guns Down Power Up founder Eric Williams to host a seven-day prayer service. “There’s been a lot of violence in this area and Louisiana period. And God laid it on my heart to start this new year off with a seven-day prayer for three months,” Williams said. Williams says in order to combat the recent increase in violence, the community and community leaders alike need to be more proactive and less reactive.

“We have to be proactive instead of waiting until a child gets killed, instead of waiting until a person gets killed. We have to be proactive,” he said.

Williams is asking for support from those leaders. “So far I haven’t had any support on this last prayer. Only a few citizens of Opelousas have come out to come together and pray with me.” Williams says he will continue his mission whether or not they decide to step-up and plans to continue holding prayer-services once a month.  [full article]
