Lucky Ducks

It was in Nevada. Some mountains (in Wyoming we call ‘em just ‘hills’) half of Lake Tahoe, and lots of desert flatlands with no casinos on them.  And in the north state, as well.  Almost. Four of us were going duck hunting. A rain squall had come in overnight but, despite dusty roads in most of the state, that wouldn’t bother us until…(“Ah, ha, there he goes again!”)…we didn’t think that rain and dirt made really good mud slop and we were in a 4-wheel drive.

So we were able to get shots off at some cans (That’s canvasbacks for you uninitiated folks) and hours later got back into the pickup headed to the nearby town of Fallon.  Went about 20 feet and sunk deep into mud.  We were way off “roads” – for lack of a better description – at the Stillwater Wildlife Refuge; if you’ve been there, you’ve done that. Hours later with no progress being made and hungry to boot, four smelly guys hunkered down in the back of the pickup for the night.

Yes, we eventually made it out of there; lots of walking to get to a paved road and a phone. We could have spent the whole season there; just us and the ducks.  But we got lucky which might be more than I could say about some other duck hunters that you’ll see in this week’s edition of…
