NAT’L – RETAILERS – FBI Background Checks For Guns Surged 41% In November, Accelerated By Biden Victory

Federal background checks for gun purchases rose 41% in November year-over-year, propelled by the election of President-elect Joseph Biden, as well as Black Friday sales and a heightened desire for self-protection during the coronavirus pandemic. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said it conducted more than 3.62 million background checks last month, compared to 2.57 million in November 2019. Background checks in November 2020 were also higher than the previous month by about 10%. The FBI conducts background checks for gun purchases by federally licensed dealers, which includes all gun shops. Last month was the strongest November since the FBI started keeping track in 1998. Mark Oliva, public affairs director for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, which represents the gun industry, said the FBI tally of 186,645 for Black Friday 2020 was a historically strong number but it was still lower than the 2019 Black Friday figure of 202,465. “Not the strongest Black Friday on record, but it’s up there,” said Oliva, noting that Thanksgiving holiday weekend figures of 417,000 were higher than the 400,000 checks conducted during the same four-day period last year. Federal background checks in the first 11 months of 2020 totaled more than 35.75 million, which means that 2020 easily exceeds 2019’s record of 28.36 million for the entire year. The month of November featured some strong catalysts for gun sales in addition to holiday shopping, including the election of President-elect Biden, a Democrat and a gun owner who has an aggressive gun control policy.  [full article]
