OH – MEDIA – Skip the petitions on background checks

Ohio voters tired of waiting for the General Assembly to expand background checks for gun buyers may just have to do it themselves. For years, lawmakers in Columbus have ignored sensible proposals that would close a loophole in gun-buying background checks by requiring those checks for nearly all gun purchases. Right now, such background checks are only required when licensed gun dealers are involved. Proponents of expanding the background checks for Ohio say they will start collecting signatures for a petition that could land the issue on the 2020 statewide ballot.

The proposed legislation drafted by Ohioans for Gun Safety would require federal background checks for all gun purchases and transfers, including private sales that happen online and at gun shows.
