OH – RETAILERS – Local gun shop owners pleased with DeWine’s decision to sign Stand Your Ground legislation

Earlier this week, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed the Stand Your Ground gun bill, which allows people to use lethal force instead of retreating. DeWine said that it is vital that law-abiding citizens have the right to legally protect themselves when confronted with a life-threatening situation. “We have been lobbying for this for some time,” said David Viltro, owner of Sportsmans Trading Post. “We had before a Stand Your Ground, but it only pertained to your home and vehicle now its anywhere in public. “Before this passed, there are three conditions that required self-defense – 1. You had great fear of public fear or death 2. You didn’t cause the incident in the first place 3. Was the duty to retreat? The duty to retreat meant if you had the ability to you had to do so,” explained William Powers, general manager at Powers Defensive Tactics.” “This issue of retreat is what has now changed. It allows a civilian with a gun to shoot someone else if they are not an aggressor, they are in fear of harm and deadly force is necessary, and they are ‘in a place in which they lawfully have the right to be.’ This comes at a time that gun and ammo sales are through the roof. They have been for nearly a year now. “Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to keep up with the demand,” Viltro said. “And neither has the gun companies.”  [full article]
