TX – GUN CRIME – One student dead, two people in custody after shooting at HISD’s Bellaire High School

Two people were taken into custody Tuesday night related to the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old student at Bellaire High School, according to the City of Bellaire and Houston ISD Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan. In a statement Tuesday night, Bellaire police said they apprehended the pair at about 7:30 p.m. but did not release any additional details. Their relationship to the victim is unclear. Later Tuesday night, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said her office is pursuing charges against the unnamed shooter. Bellaire Mayor Andrew S. Friedberg struck a somber note in a lengthy statement, saying: “School is supposed to be a safe place, but our very basic sense of security now gives way to worry. We owe it to our children to find some way to restore it.” Lathan initially said Bellaire High would reopen on Wednesday with additional security and grief counselors, but the district later said classes would be canceled. Staff was asked to report to the campus Wednesday and students are expected back Thursday.  [full article]
