TX – GUN RIGHTS – Biedermann Pledges to File Constitutional Carry Legislation

As the legislative session draws nearer, lawmakers are beginning the process of drafting legislation to be considered after the Legislature gavels in on January 12, 2021. State Rep. Kyle Biedermann (R–Fredericksburg) announced he’ll be filing one of the Republican Party of Texas’ pieces of priority legislation: constitutional carry. A longtime priority for gun-rights activists in Texas, constitutional carry—which would eliminate the state’s requirement of permits, licensing, and fees to carry a firearm—has also been a top legislative priority of the Texas GOP for years. Last month, delegates to the Republican Party of Texas’ virtual convention voted to keep constitutional carry as one of its eight priorities heading into the next legislative session: “Restore legal Texas firearms owners’ rights to carry them openly or concealed without a permit, while maintaining the option of a permit for reciprocity purposes.” For the past several sessions, the bill has been filed and championed by State Rep. Jonathan Stickland (R–Bedford), with another variation being filed by State Rep. James White (R–Hillister). Last year, however, Stickland announced he would not seek re-election. Biedermann, who has served in the Texas House since 2017, says he’ll be taking up the mantle in 2021.  [full article]
