VA – GUN SAFETY – Let’s keep our heads (and MAGA hats)

Last week’s confrontation between an armed MAGA-hat-wearing Trump supporter and an apparent Trump opponent who allegedly threatened to assault him at the Wyoming Valley Mall should fill all of us with dread over what could happen in the next 10 months as Luzerne County becomes a focal point of one of the most heated presidential campaigns in American history. There’s no arguing over who started this particular politically motivated dust-up. No American should be threatened for expressing their political beliefs whether on a hat, on a T-shirt, in writing or in speech. And arguments on the far left that a “Make America Great Again” hat is analogous to a KKK hood are dangerously inflammatory and destructive. The victim in this case was legally armed and although the mall has a no-firearms policy, his carrying of a concealed weapon would only be criminal if he disobeyed orders from mall officials to leave the premises. Police say he drew his weapon and pointed it at the ground when the assailant tried to swipe the hat from his head and the assailant fled. Readers can judge for themselves whether the gun owner’s actions were proportionate to the threat involved. The larger question is whether we as citizens of Luzerne County, and citizens across the nation, will be able to keep our cool in this heated environment into November. Our governing system was designed to channel our political disagreements toward reasoned discourse and we should not let the passions of the moment derail that system. Presidential preferences are not valid grounds for insulting, assaulting or shooting your neighbor. There are 298 days until the General Election. Let’s be safe, and sane, out there.  [view source]
