Gobbelty Goose

Even in the pre-daybreak dark the sound we could hear from far-off in the very windy somewhere morning skies was more turkey-like than goose. It wasn’t until they drew closer to the blind were we able to distinguish between the two very different birds. Living with turkeys in one’s yards and horse pastures we’re used to their occasional responses when we prompt them. Every early spring we are greeted overhead by a returning pair of Canadian honkers that have come “home” to roost by a fairly large creek-fed pond and set up for family matters. We don’t know if they are the same pair year after year or their offspring.  Either way a pair of geese arrive and, between the two very different birds, geese and turkeys, they never seem to tire of the same old place at the same old time.

We don’t hunt them here – ‘here’ being our home as well as theirs – but there are plenty of places nearby where both birds satisfy the goal of big bird hunters some of which – and whom – you’ll see in this edition of….
