WI – GUN RIGHTS – FBI Background Checks Exceed 3.11 Million In August, Driven By Civil Unrest In Kenosha
Background checks for gun purchases surged past 3.11 million in August, reported the Federal Bureau of Investigation late on Tuesday, as civil unrest continues to drive gun sales in a frenzied bid for self-protection. Images of burning cities, police brutality, armored cars rolling through the streets, civilians toting AR-15s and clouds of tear gas drove people to buy guns even in relatively tranquil places far from the action. Civil unrest continued to dominate the news cycle throughout August, with the police shooting of a Black man, Jacob Blake, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. This was followed by protests that erupted into deadly gun violence, when teenager Kyle Rittenhouse was arrested for allegedly killing two protesters with an AR-15. “The spread of riot chaos from Kenosha” was a prime driver for gun sales, and therefore background checks, according to Brian Rafn, a recently retired gun industry analyst from Morgan Dempsey whose family owns shares in the gun maker Sturm, Ruger RGR -0.9%. He referred to Kenosha as a “Battle of Midway” between Black Lives Matter protesters and “MAGA hat guys.” Gun buyers are motivated by the perception that America is unraveling, most recently in Portland, Oregon, where someone was shot dead on Saturday as Trump supporters clashed with protesters opposing police brutality.
