WI – HUNTING – Hunters register 188,712 deer in Wisconsin’s nine-day gun season, 16% more than in 2019
Hunters registered 188,712 white-tailed deer during the 2020 Wisconsin nine-day gun deer season, an increase of 16% from the previous year but 9% below the 10-year average, according to a preliminary report issued Tuesday by the Department of Natural Resources. The 2020 kill included 85,340 bucks (up 12% from 2019) and 103,372 antlerless deer (up 19%). Compared to last season, the 2020 harvest increased in each of the four management regions. The agency reported gun deer license sales of 569,203, an increase of 3,337 (or 0.6%) from 2019. Nine shooting incidents, including one fatality, occurred during the season, up from four non-fatal incidents in the 2019 season and above the five-year average of 5.2. The 2020 nine-day season ran Nov. 21-29. Multiple factors favored hunters this year, including an earlier start to the season, a greater percentage of crops harvested and generally better weather. Except for a day or two of rain and high winds mid-season, DNR staff reported excellent hunting conditions. Much of northern Wisconsin also had a hunter-friendly coating of snow. The top three counties for deer kill were Marathon with 6,669, Shawano (5,904) and Vernon (5,596). The season continued a general trend toward fewer deer being taken during the nine-day gun hunt as a percentage of the total state deer kill. [full article]
